10 Repatriation Tips for OFWs

The ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah has prompted the Philippines to start the repatriation process. Repatriation means the process of returning a person or things to its country of origin. This process applies to asylum seekers, illegal migrants, OFWs, diplomatic officials and military personnel. Here are some essential tips for when you face similar situation abroad.

 

Understanding the repatriation process

 

   1. Stay informed

  • Regularly check updates or news from the Department of Migrant Workers and Department of Foreign Affairs and other related government agencies regarding safety protocols and repatriation flights. They provide assistance in consulates and embassies.

    2, Register for Repatriation

  • Register with the DMW. This can be done through online platforms or direct contact with the embassy or consulate.

    3. Know your rights

  • Exercise awareness of your rights when are facing issues with your employers regarding your exit clearance.

 

Financial Assistance

 

     4. At home, OFWs may receive financial and medical assistance from various government agency programs. Returning works can receive a certain amount to start a business or start their new life transition. Make sure to read the requirements for availing such aid.
 

     5. Familiarize yourself with programs that assist with livelihood and skills training upon return. Organizations like the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) offer training vouchers to help OFWs transition back into the local job market.

 

Safety Precautions

 

      6. Prioritize Safety:

  • Prioritize your safety if you’re in or near the conflict zone. Follow local advisories, and stay in designated safe areas such as bomb shelters.
     

      7. Keep Essential Documents Ready:

  • Secure your important documents such as passport, Identification cards, visa, contract copy and other important documents. This will make sure a smooth repatriation process.
     

Emotional and Social Support
 

       8. Seek Emotional Support:

  • Traumatic experiences can be challenging. Connect with NGOs, support groups or counselling services to help process your experiences during the conflict.

       9. Connect with Fellow OFWs:

  • Stay with other OFWs who may under similar situations. They can share info or provide valuable support on repatriation process.
     

       10. Search for jobs early.

Unless you have a huge savings or plan for business, seeking employment is your logical course before returning home. Leverage your experience and skills gained abroad, and consider networking opportunities from your networking connections.
 

Through awareness of the repatriation process, OFWs can better navigate the challenges of repatriation during this difficult time in Lebanon.
